What to watch this week, from Dear England to The Four Seasons

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

Dear England

BBC1

A drama about Gareth Southgate’s tenure as the England football team’s manager, adapted by James Graham (Sherwood) from his own award-winning play.  Joseph Fiennes reprises his stage role as an eerily familiar Southgate, who stood down as England manager in 2024. Jodie Whittaker plays the psychologist helping him. A study of the glory and pain of the beautiful game, but is it overlong?

The Four Seasons

(Netflix)

A welcome return for the spiky Tina Fey comedy about middle-aged American couples holidaying together, while dealing with myriad issues. Also starring Colman Domingo.

Two Weeks in August

(BBC One)

This starts as a White Lotus-style drama, simmering with secrets and lies as couples holiday together in Greece. Events take a muddled mystic turn, but the script bites and there are great performances from Jessica Raine, Leila Farzad, Hugh Skinner (below) and Nicholas Pinnock.

(ITV1)

Another reality gameshow trying to be the new The Traitors. It’s not – but it is amusingly hosted by Danny Dyer and Emily Atack (who star together in Rivals on Disney+).
