For winter sun
Withholding a fragrance for trips abroad might seem excessive but olfactory memories are another way of enhancing the seasonal experience, especially as temperature and humidity affect how a scent performs. This cologne feels like the ultimate companion to sun-kissed skin, with notes of bitter orange warmed by amber-fed labdanum. I’m already holding mental space for it in my liquids allowance. Amber Labdanum Cologne Intense, £164, Jo Malone London (Harrods)
For the office
A workplace fragrance shouldn’t feel like it’s trying too hard. Wearing this one in the office, a colleague passing my desk exclaimed, “it smells wonderfully clean over here”. This sums up our goal perfectly. With notes of grated ginger and juniper this scent is shower-fresh on steroids: clean, confident and approachable. LBTY Fragrance Tudor Eau De Parfum, £225, Liberty London
For compliments
Perhaps I should be gatekeeping this one, but having your fragrance applauded by a stranger on the morning commute is a feeling I want to share. This Maison Margiela scent is my most complimented - “By the Fireplace” is sweet and smoky all in one. I like to think that this is how Harry Styles would smell (or at least a fire-lit weekend away with him in a remote log cabin). REPLICA By the Fireplace EDT, £120, Maison Margiela Paris
For a perfect gift
Gifting a new fragrance is undoubtedly thoughtful, but can feel risky. To avoid going in nose-blind, I recommend taking your loved one to Le Labo. My most recent purchase from the brand is POIVRE 23, which is peppery and playful; perfect for autumn. Le Labo have a scattering of stores throughout the UK offering discounted refills and personalised, customisable packaging. POIVRE 23, from £122, Le Labo, exclusive to London stores
For a first date
Initial attraction and common interests fall by the wayside if you don't like the way someone smells, so pay attention to what can’t be communicated over an app. When dating, try to explore fragrances that are rich and unique – and something your companion will remember. This scent evokes the crackle of worn leather with tobacco and salted amber. BYREDO Rodeo Eau de Parfum, £220, exclusive to Selfridges
