John read English Literature at University College London, then began sub-editing, first for various glossies, later on for The Sunday Telegraph Magazine (chief sub for ten years; he wrote the 'Songbird of the Week' column) and then freelancing on the FT Magazine, The Spectator and The Observer Magazine. He has also worked as a copy-editor at Thames & Hudson, and published three books in the start-up Seaside Shakespeare series.
