Jon studied mathematics at Worcester College Oxford and has been a professional chess player since he graduated in 1977. A three-time British champion, he represented England in 14 chess Olympiads, reached the semi-final of the World Champions Candidates tournament in 1989 and at his peak was ranked fourth equal in the world. He's been chess columnist of the Sunday Correspondent, the Independent and since 1993 the Observer.
