“I wanted to approach making portraits in an ambitious, slightly wild way,” says Jack Davison of his new series Portraits: 14-16 November 2024, which is on show at the Paris Photo fair.
Over three days last November, Davison – who has photographed stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett for the New York Times and elsewhere – took pictures of 88 people across London, using street-casting to find his subjects.
These simple, stark portraits were then printed using the photopolymer gravure process, which imbues the work with a skewed, haunted atmosphere redolent of the past. “Some people see ecclesiastical figures” in the portraits,” says Davison. “For me, they feel more like knights; there is something medieval in their humble pageantry.”
