The grid: Jane Hilton’s modern-day cowboys

The British photographer’s portraits of ranch hands at home offer an intimate look at ‘the new Americana’

Cowboys can feel like relics of the silver screen. But British photographer Jane Hilton, who has spent years documenting what she calls “the new Americana”, has captured these figures in a decidedly different light for her exhibition Cowboys & Queens, which is touring the US, and also features Hilton’s pictures of drag queens. Shot on film, portraits of ranch hands at rest in their homes juxtapose softly lit interiors with the fabled, macho imagery of the cowboy, hats and all. It makes for an intimate, quietly beautiful series.

Cowboys & Queens is at the Hulett Collection, Tulsa, Oklahoma, until 15 November
