What to watch this week, from Believe Me to Marty, Life Is Short

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

Believe Me

ITV1

A true-crime drama looking into the case of John Worboys, the so-called black cab rapist. He was convicted in 2009 of attacks on 12 women and found guilty of an additional four assaults in 2019, but is suspected of committing more than a hundred more. Worboys, played by Daniel Mays, would pretend to celebrate a casino win then pressure female passengers into drinking spiked drinks. Creator Jeff Pope (The Reckoning) pulls focus to the women: their treatment by the police and their fight for justice.  Starring Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Aasiya Shah.

Marty, Life Is Short

Netflix

Lawrence Kasdan’s bio-doc looks at the life and work of legendary Canadian comedian Martin Short. It features early losses, career highs on Saturday Night Live and Short’s enduring friendship with fellow comedian Steve Martin.

LGBTQ+ Hits at the BBC

BBC Two

Splashy, groovy celebration of pop stars who pushed boundaries and of artists embraced by LGBTQ+ audiences. Featuring archive footage of Dusty Springfield, Boy George, Scissor Sisters, Beth Ditto and many more.

Disney Plus

Return of the docuseries that serves as a quasi-Ted Lasso, following the fortunes of Wrexham FC, the football club improbably purchased by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020.
