What to watch this week, from Chris and Martina to The Pitt

Our TV critic on the best new shows airing and streaming

Chris and Martina: The Final Set

Netflix

In the 70s and 80s, female tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova were rivals; now they are friends supporting each other through cancer treatment. This is a tender story that, unlike most self-promoting sports documentaries these days, has real heart.

The Bear

Disney+

In its fifth and final season, the Emmy-sweeping, era-defining show serves a simple menu that recalls what first made it great, bringing the gang together for one last – incredibly tense – service.

The Pitt

HBO Max

The second season finale of the medical drama from the creators of ER rounds out a chaotic 4 July shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center with fireworks, karaoke, emotional heart to hearts and an emergency c-section.
