What to watch this week, from Euphoria to the final series of Hacks

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

Euphoria

(Sky Atlantic/HBO Max)

Sam Levinson’s show about dysfunctional US teenagers is back after a four-year break. The characters have left the high school for the real world. The now very famous cast members – Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi – reprise the roles that made their names. Everything is set for Euphoria’s triumphant return. So what happened?

Beef

(Netflix)

The first hit series of the show sprang from LA road rage. The new series, starring Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac, is set in an elite country club and has two desperate couples vying to survive in the capitalist US. Dark, delicious and a little bit White Lotus.

Storyville: Speechless

(BBC Four)

Ric Esther Bienstock’s uncompromising docuseries explores culture wars on US campuses since 2017, with interviews, secret filming and insider testimony. Startling viewing.

Hacks

(Sky Atlantic/Now)

Final series outing for the Las Vegas double act of comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and equally acerbic comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Acid, hilarious, moving – what a show it has been.
