What to watch this week, from Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere to Rooster

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere

(Netflix)

One-off documentary from Louis Theroux examining the manosphere – the murky online world of masculinist influencers touting hardline misogyny. Theroux probes the mindsets of some of the foremost manosphere players, including Harrison Sullivan (AKA HStikkytokky), Amrou Fudl (Myron Gaines) and Justin Waller.

Gone

(ITV1)

From George Kay (Lupin, Criminal) comes an atmospheric thriller starring Eve Myles as a detective looking into an aloof headmaster (David Morrissey) whose wife goes missing.

Rooster

(Sky One)

A US ensemble campus comedy co-created by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Scrubs). Steve Carell plays a writer consoling his academic daughter (Charly Clive) after her husband left her. An uneven start, but offbeat and moreish.

(BBC Four)

A chance to view Elizabeth Lo’s distinctive Chinese docufilm. It follows a “mistress dispeller” – a professional brought in to break up an extramarital affair. An absorbing study of relationship mores.
