What to watch this week, from Prisoner 951 to RuPaul’s Drag Race

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows currently airing and streaming

Prisoner 951

BBC One

Iranian-British dual citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was detained in Iran between 2016 and 2022 on trumped up charges. Stephen Butchard’s elegantly furious drama explores the incarceration of Nazanin (Narges Rashidi), the campaign for her release by her husband Richard (Joseph Fiennes), and the pivotal role played by a decades-old £400m tank debt owed by the UK to Iran.

Greatest Basslines

Sky Arts

Never underestimate the rhythm section. A series looking at bass players featuring Peter Hook (New Order), Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole; the Smashing Pumpkins) and Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters). Contributors also include the hugely influential Mani from the Stone Roses, who died this month.

Poison Water

BBC Two

Tenacious documentary about contaminated drinking water in Cornwall in 1988 that local scientist Doug Cross thinks led to his wife’s premature death.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK

BBC Three

The final of this year’s homegrown wing of Drag Race, hosted by RuPaul and Michelle Visage. Wit, campery, shade and fabulousness.
