What to watch this week, from Tip Toe to Witness

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

Tip Toe

Channel 4

Russell T Davies gave us Queer As Folk, It’s A Sin, Years And Years, and more. His new Manchester-set drama Tip Toe focuses on how bigotry is on the rise, and where that could lead. Alan Cumming plays Leo, the owner of a LGBTQ+ bar, and David Morrissey is Clive, his prejudiced resentful neighbour. Where Davies’s intense drama begins and ends is not for the faint-hearted.

Witness

Netflix

Evocative true-crime drama about the Rachel Nickell murder on Wimbledon Common in 1992, focusing on the lengthy, mishandled investigation, and how her partner, Andre, and toddler son, Alex (the only witness) coped. Starring Jordan Bolger, Max Fincham and Neil Maskell.

Emma Barnett: Fighting Endometriosis

BBC Two

An enlightening documentary about the painful, debilitating disease of endometriosis (where tissue grows outside the uterus) which has no known cure. Helmed by Today presenter Emma  Barnett, who suffers from the condition.
