What to watch this week, from Vladimir to Young Sherlock

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

Vladimir

(Netflix)

Rachel Weisz stars in this dark comedy drama about a college professor who develops an erotic fixation on a much younger academic, Vladimir, played by Leo Woodall (One Day). As life grows more complicated, so do her impulses. Based on the 2022 novel by the American author Julia May Jonas, it is made by Sharon Horgan’s production company.

Young Sherlock

(Amazon Prime Video)

Guy Ritchie made two films about Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr. Now he brings us a TV prequel depicting the sleuth as a young man. Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars as young Sherlock, while his real-life uncle, Joseph Fiennes, plays his father.

Panorama, Will Robots Take My Job?

(BBC One)

Documentary exploring what AI and cutting-edge robotics mean for human beings and job security.

(Channel 4)

Reality show cuffing together people with contrasting personalities. The last pair standing share a £100,000 prize. Hosted by Jonathan Ross, it’s a show that feels very early 00s, and, thus far, not in a good way.
