German media giant Axel Springer has completed its £575m purchase of the Telegraph, marking the end of a torturous sale process. In 2023 the Barclay brothers agreed to sell the title, along with the Spectator, to RedBird IMI, an Emirati-backed fund. The deal sparked a newsroom rebellion and was blocked by legislation preventing foreign states from owning British newspapers. Daily Mail owner Lord Rothermere, who has sought to acquire the newspaper for decades, then tried to swoop in with a £500m offer. But his proposed takeover was held up by concerns it would give him too much influence over the press. Axel Springer plans to target American readers and roll out an “AI-powered digital transformation” to automate tasks such as sub-editing, fact-checking and newsgathering. This could mean cuts are in the pipeline.
