A German YouTuber has won the men’s cheese-rolling race in Gloucestershire for the third year in a row. Tom Kopke defeated Chris Anderson, a local man who has won the contest 23 times and came out of retirement for this year’s edition. The origins of the race – in which competitors chase a 3kg wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down a steep slope – are not known. One theory is that it began as a pagan ritual to mark the summer solstice, while another links it to Roman traditions. It has become a global spectacle that attracts competitors from around the world, including social media influencers in search of content. This year’s edition was broadcast live by the BBC, which also ran a liveblog on its website.
