Is there a wider backlash brewing against Taylor Swift thanks to her ostentatious mega-wedding? Despite fear of a pile-on from the notoriously loyal and eagle-eyed Swifties, some fans have been posting on social media voicing their unease with what Swift’s wedding to Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan represents. Held on July 4th, the 250th anniversary of the American declaration of independence, the stadium was sealed off while a parade of invited celebrities made their way to witness the nuptials. Writing on Instagram, journalist and critic Elle Hunt wrote: “I have been increasingly alienated by [Swift’s] apparent obsession with wealth, power and cultural dominance since the Eras tour, and this wedding debacle is the last straw for me … She is first and foremost a billionaire to me now.” New Yorkers faced closed streets and a heatwave-induced electricity outage, which did not help the optics. Writing on X, one fan wrote “[it’s] the epitome of out of touch and ‘let them eat cake’.”
