David Sullivan, the Welsh tycoon, has stood down as joint chair of West Ham United ahead of a BBC Panorama documentary that has been investigating his behaviour. Sullivan, 77, who made his fortune in the adult industry, said he categorically denied the “decades-old allegations”. He said none of them involved his interests in football and that he will sue the BBC for libel. West Ham was relegated from the Premier League last season and now will be forced to account for the departure of its largest shareholder. Sullivan still has a 38.8% stake in the club, which plays at the London Stadium, a ground built for the 2012 Olympics and subsidised with public funds.
