Israel has struck the Lebanese port of Tyre, killing at least eight people, after ordering its residents to leave. The attack underlines how Donald Trump is struggling to keep a lid on the crisis he has unleashed in the Middle East. He has insisted that “I call all the shots” and that Benjamin Netanyahu will “do whatever I tell him to do”. But the Israeli leader seems determined to forge ahead with his operation in Lebanon, despite US attempts to broker a ceasefire. All eyes are now on Iran. After a recent exchange of fire with Israel, it warned it would resume hostilities if Israel continued its Lebanese campaign. Trump, meanwhile, has vowed to respond after Iran shot down a US helicopter near Oman. A return to war is a growing possibility.
