The US and Iran have agreed on a peace deal, which Donald Trump said would “let the oil flow”. It is expected to be signed on Friday in Switzerland. The exact terms of the deal are not public, but the US president said it included a “toll-free” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. It also reportedly contains an agreement to extend the existing ceasefire for 60 days, leaving tricky issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions for later. The news came hours after Israel launched a strike against Beirut, which Pakistan’s prime minister said was included in the peace deal. Trump said he had succeeded where other American presidents had failed by making peace with Iran. But the deal he has struck appears to be a limited framework intended as a starting point for more substantive discussions, rather than an actual peace agreement.
