PlayStation has announced that its games will no longer be released on optical discs from January 2028. Rockstar said last week that Grand Theft Auto VI, which is out this November, would also be digital only. Those used to sharing games with friends will be at a loss. So will CeX, the British retailer which sells pre-owned video games at more than 600 stores across the world. But the decision should come as no surprise. Due to online shopfronts such as Steam and the PlayStation store, digital sales now account for the majority of industry revenue. Careless gamers may also be celebrating: scratched discs will no longer be a worry.
