Fresh threads: eight standout trends from the season’s key menswear collections

Spring saw a return to tailoring, well-worn jeans and bold colour. Here are the top looks to inspire your summer wardrobe

Pink
Salmon to soft pink appeared across the runways, at Burberry, Willy Chavarria and Balmain. Follow Feng Chen Wang’s and Hermès’ lead and introduce baby pink as an accessory accent for an easy way to wear the trend.

Handbags
Jacob Elordi and A$AP Rocky have been putting in a shift when it comes to promoting handbags for men, with both regularly seen toting one. You know it’s a bona fide trend when the elder statesman of British style, Sir Paul Smith, sends them down his runway.

Stripes
Preppy stripes got a fashion spin this season; at Dries Van Noten creative director Julien Klausner mixed rugby and jockey silk stripes, while at Comme des Garçons Rei Kawakubo plumped for test-card bright verticals on a hoodie, and Undercover reworked Bretons.

Well-worn jeans
Good news: your most loved, worn-in jeans are this season’s hottest piece. The more rips, frays and patches, the better. At Dior Jonathan Anderson (often seen wearing vintage Levi’s) presented his version, styled with crisp shirts, ties and cravats, for the ultimate high/low mix.

Bold knits
Trophy sweaters, as seen at Celine, Hermès, MSGM and Junya Watanabe, came in primary colours or novelty homespun designs that look like your nan knitted them. Throw on with jeans for a fuss-free look.

The leather jacket
Leather jackets can be divisive. You’re either in the camp that sees them as T-Bird or Easy Rider cosplay, or you understand they add a note of cool. Prada’s retro-cut jacket is the reference – look for something that’s part workwear cut and part blazer. Vintage stores are a prime hunting ground.

Wide-leg trousers
Pants that puddle over footwear are where the trouser needle is at. At Louis Vuitton, King of Swag Pharrell showed them styled with tucked striped shirts layered over vests, while Armani’s looked holiday-ready worn with sandals and breezy tops.

Tailoring
After a few seasons on the style bench, tailoring is enjoying a resurgence, thanks in no small part to Saint Laurent where Anthony Vaccarello set the bar for modern suiting with lightweight, sharp-shouldered blazers styled with silk satin shirts and ties. Style note: tucked ties are the dernier cri in chic this spring.
