Roll with it: the enduring appeal of the Oasis look

Maine road T-shirt £100, Represent

Why the Oasis look is still refreshing wardrobes after all these years

The much awaited reunion tour is well underway and the Gallaghers’ signature Britpop, terrace-wear-influenced look remains as popular as ever with brand collaborations covering all the essentials from tour tees to parkas. The “if it ain’t broke” mantra has never rung more true as droves of fans descend on stadiums wearing carbon copies of the original Oasis look. But the appeal stretches beyond Gen Xers revisiting their youth. Fellow Mancunian brothers Michael and George Heaton, founders of the hugely successful Gen-Z streetwear label Represent, can’t restock their Oasis collab quick enough; it’s sold out multiple times since it launched. The Maine Road T-shirt, (£100, worn by the model, above), featuring imagery by Kevin Cummins, is a best seller. No self-respecting Oasis look is really complete without a parka. Back in the 90s, Liam’s preferred ones came from Berghaus – OG styles include the Trango (£400) and the Meru (£290), jackets famously worn by him in 1997 on stage in Oslo. Levi’s have created a homage version in denim, (£210) and Barbour’s Re-Engineered style in navy (£289, John Lewis) offers a more minimalist take. The beauty of this look is that it’s affordable and requires little effort to assemble. Nineties edits now come as standard on vintage websites like Beyond Retro and Thrifted, reducing the amount of scrolling required. Shopping preloved pieces guarantees an authentic look, but everyone from Asos to Burberry are in on the act, the latter signing up Liam and his offspring as part of their highly successful festival campaign, underlining the crossgenerational appeal. One styling note to heed: avoid cosplay by choosing either a bucket hat or parka – not both.
