Ceramics have always been a vehicle for storytelling; think of ancient Greek black-figure amphorae or the sculptural reliefs of Wedgwood pottery. In recent years, a new artist has become conversant with that lineage: the Philadelphia-based ceramicist and social activist Roberto Lugo, who makes striking textured vases and vessels adorned with vibrant graffiti, deft narratives and portraiture of notable Black individuals, including Rosa Parks and Angela Davis.
“My work is primarily focused on representing the stories and culture of my people,” says Lugo. “People from the city, impoverished communities, people of colour ... I really wanted to make something that people from where I’m from can connect with.”
