One to watch: Annahstasia

Years after being discovered in her teens, the American singer-songwriter’s strikingly rich voice has finally found its true expression

You can trace a sonic lineage from Annahstasia Enuke back to the humanity of Tracy Chapman, or perhaps the smoothness of Sade, but the Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter, 30, has fought to craft something entirely her own. Discovered at 17 then signed to a lengthy label development deal that wanted to push her towards the mainstream, it took Enuke a decade to emerge with a gorgeous strand of haunting, luscious folk that now unfurls across forthcoming debut LP Tether. “Tether is about what grounds me in reality,” she told Nataal. “I’m always drifting between wanting to give up and keep pushing forward.”

Thank goodness she persevered, because Tether provides a showcase for a remarkable vocal talent that’s like little else around. Sunday, from last year’s Surface Tension EP, demonstrated Enuke’s ability to convey raw emotion with total control, while Tether finds her rich and resonant on Waiting, and joined by Nigerian singer Obongjayar on goosebump-worthy duet Slow.

Having described her career as “a lesson in patience”, a meditative energy flows through Annahstasia’s debut. Largely centred around the intimacy of acoustic guitar, but fleshed out with flourishes of strings, piano and the revelatory cacophony of Silver and Velvet, it’s an album that rings with the confidence of decisions made intentionally, and the clarity that comes from truly knowing yourself.

Tether is released on 13 June via drink sum wtr
