What to watch this week, from a gay ice hockey drama to the return of Black Ops

The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

Heated Rivalry

Sky Atlantic

A surprise hit in the US – especially with female viewers – Jacob Tierney’s intriguing Canadian drama about a gay romance between two ice hockey players is now available in the UK. It focuses on the hidden erotic relationship between two rival players, one Canadian (Hudson Williams), one Russian (Connor Storrie). Sexually explicit for mainstream TV.

The Lowdown

Disney+

Ethan Hawke plays a craggy citizen journalist taking on the bad guys in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From Sterlin Harjo – who created Reservation Dogs with Taika Waititi – it’s left-field comedy-drama with a Coen brothers tinge.

Black Ops

BBC One

Return of the award-winning UK-based comedy-thriller about two incompetent spies, Dom (Gbemisola Ikumelo) and Kay (Hammed Animashaun), now working full-time at M15. Winningly playful, while taking swipes at institutionalised racism.

Lucy Worsley’s Victorian Murder Club

BBC Two

The historian pokes into the dark crannies of Victorian Britain in pursuit of forgotten serial killers, such as the Thames Torso Murderer, who were never caught.
