What to watch this week, from Lord of the Flies to Small Prophets

Jack Thorne’s chilling take on a tale of boyhood cruelty and the Detectorists’ Mackenzie Crook strikes gold again

Lord of the Flies

BBC One

Jack Thorne’s adaptation of the William Golding novel is rich with suspicion and paranoia as a group of marooned young boys betray friends to save their own skin – and fall recklessly for the excitement of a leader who promises easy alternatives. Sound familiar?

Small Prophets

BBC Two

Mackenzie Crook, creator of the hilarious metal detector enthusiast series, Detectorists, strikes gold again with this sitcom about a lonely man (Pearce Quigley) living in a Manchester cul-de-sac and at an existential dead-end. Also featuring Michael Palin.

Love Story

Disney Plus

The prolific Ryan Murphy has created a romance for the ages with a nine-parter following JFK Jr (Paul Anthony Kelly) and Carolyn Bessette (Sarah Pidgeon) from their 1996 wedding to their tragic end. Nineties nostalgia-bait dressed in very good clothes.

Knife Crime: What Happened to Our Boys?

BBC One

Disturbing evidence of organised crime’s grip on the country, this harrowing documentary tells the story of two teenage boys murdered in south-east London and the gangs they were caught up in.
