The Observer’s TV critic Barbara Ellen on the best new shows airing and streaming

The Investigation Of Lucy Letby

Netflix

In 2023, neonatal nurse Lucy Letby was convicted of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of seven others at the Countess of Chester hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. Many are assured of Letby’s guilt; others protest her innocence. This documentary interviews one of the bereaved mothers and shows previously unseen footage of Letby’s arrests. But did it need to be made?

Lover, Liar, Predator

(BBC Two)

Powerful documentary about a group of women targeted, coercively abused and assaulted by the same man. The women join forces to have the man, Aaron Swan, prosecuted.

Waiting for the Out

(BBC One)

Conclusion of Dennis Kelly’s acclaimed drama about a man (Josh Finan) who teaches philosophy in a prison and ends up navigating his own crisis.

Mission to Space with Francis Bourgeois
