Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spain’s prime minister, has been charged with corruption after a two-year criminal investigation. Accused of using public resources and her relationship with her husband to advance private interests, Gómez has been charged with influence peddling, corruption in business dealings, embezzlement and misappropriation of funds. It is one of several corruption cases that have put Pedro Sánchez under pressure and previously led him to consider his own position. Gómez has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, while Sánchez has dismissed the allegations as a baseless ploy to take down his socialist government. The case originated from a complaint filed by an anti-corruption group with ties to the far right. It has launched a series of judicial proceedings against politicians in recent years. Most have failed.
