The horror was there from the start. In the faces of the hostages, wrestled into golf buggies and driven across the border; in the footage of young people dressed for a night out sprinting for their lives across scrubland as 378 of their fellow festival-goers were slaughtered. It was there on the first night of the bombing of Gaza: the first apartment blocks flattened, the first hospital hit.
From 7 October 2023, the terror of the Hamas attack and Israel’s devastating war on Gaza has been impossible to ignore. Despite a ban on international media entering Gaza, no war has ever been so clearly and widely documented. It fills our TV screens, our newspapers, our phones, whether on WhatsApp chats or Instagram feeds.
Photographs, far more than words, have brought home the trauma of famine, the utter devastation of cities and the agony, fear and desperation that this war has created. As a ceasefire begins and thousands start the long walk back to a home that no longer exists, the horror remains, but there is also a tiny sliver of hope.
