Lib Dems set to lay down law for Musk in UK

Billionaire could be arrested and brought before Commons speaker

Elon Musk could be dragged to the House of Commons to be reprimanded over his call for “revolutionary government change”. The Liberal Democrats plan to table a parliamentary motion with a “summons to the bar of the house” for America’s richest man. If the historic measure is passed, Musk would be ordered to appear before MPs to explain himself and be admonished by the speaker. The serjeant at arms, the official responsible for maintaining order in the Commons, could be sent to arrest Musk and bring him to Westminster when he next travels to the UK. Ed Davey, the Lib Dem leader, plans to table the motion as soon as the Commons returns after the parliamentary recess and challenge other parties to back it. If they do not back it, they might be forced into the position of appearing to defend Musk.

Davey is also calling on the regulator Ofcom to bring enforcement proceedings against Musk and his social media platform X for breaking the UK’s online safety laws. He is expected to tell his party conference this week: “We know why Elon Musk is so keen to meddle in our democracy. It’s not because he cares about the British people, and our rights, and our freedoms. It’s all about his ego, power and wealth.” He will add: “The UK must stand up to Elon Musk and properly enforce our laws so he can’t get away with inflicting harm on our kids.”
