San Diego police say they are investigating a fatal shooting on a mosque as a possible hate crime. Five people died in the attack, including two teenage suspects found with what are believed to be self-inflicted wounds. One of the victims was Amin Abdullah, a security guard and father of eight, whose “heroic” actions, police said, helped to save lives. Several Republicans have made Islamophobic comments in the past few months, including Andy Ogles of Tennessee, who wrote in March that “Muslims don’t belong in American society”. The California mosque shooting is the latest in a spate of attacks against religious communities in the US. Other places targeted include a Catholic school in Minnesota and a synagogue in Michigan.
