Restaurant’s own: the trend for use-at-home products

Call it cheating, but sometimes we don’t want to make everything ourselves

Increasingly, chefs and restaurants are launching sauces as the base for dinner, or condiments to have alongside. Here are some of the best.

Ottolenghi miso pesto, £4.10. When does pesto not contain basil? When Yotam Ottolenghi is involved. Miso, caramelised onion and spinach are all here; pine nuts are the only constant from the classic Genovese recipe. Yet still it’s great swirled through noodles or pasta, or spread on bruschetta. waitrose.com

Gymkhana tandoori marinade £5.75. Yes, it costs more than other supermarket curry pastes, but we think this one (and the sauces and chutneys) from the two-Michelin-starred Gymkhana is worth splurging for. ocado.com

Omiyage by Koya fukujinzuke soy pickled daikon £10.99. We loved Koya’s collab with east London’s Land Chocolate, and we’ve sent their mail-order udon to friends over the years. Recently we’ve been eating their pickles. The price of this jar may be punchy, but the flavours are too. Love. souschef.co.uk

Payst by Farang, jungle curry £4.95. For a taste of Sebby Holmes’ north London restaurant at home, there are curry pastes (red, green, yellow massaman, jungle), stir-fry sauces (including for pad thais both vegan and not) and dipping sauces (the burnt green chilli is of note). payst.co.uk

Poon’s London WO sauce £8.50. Before she moved into Somerset House, Amy Poon resurrected her family’s restaurant business with residencies and her line of condiments. The soy and chilli vinegar sauces rightly attract praise, but we most love the WO sauce, based on the classic XO sauce from Hong Kong. Deeply savoury, it improves any bowl of rice. ocado.com

Ardfern brown sauce £7.50. Brunch is a key offering at Roberta Hall-McCarron’s all-dar café/bar/bottle shop, and her kitchen also makes a couple of the key condiments for home use. Any plate of oysters is improved with a splash of Nori Hot Sauce, but it’s this superior brown sauce that we’ve been sloshing all over breakfast sandwiches. ardfern.uk
