The best dance to see in 2026

A BalletBoyz retrospective, Gentleman Jack the ballet and an original Pina Bausch cast are among next year’s highlights

Paul Taylor Dance Company

Linbury theatre, Royal Opera House

There’s a modern American masters feeling at the Linbury early in the year as the Paul Taylor Dance Company return to the UK for the first time in almost 20 years with two triple bills from 27-31 January. Then Glen Tetley’s haunting Pierrot Lunaire is revived from 10-20 February.

Gentleman Jack

Northern Ballet, Leeds Grand theatre and touring

This world premiere based on the diaries of groundbreaking Yorkshire woman Anne Lister – “the first modern lesbian” – who chronicled a life lived on her own terms, is choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and has a score by Peter Salem. Sally Wainwright, who wrote the TV series of the same name, is creative consultant.

7-14 March, then tours to Sheffield, Nottingham, London, Norwich, Salford and Bradford until 5 September

Russell Maliphant Dance Company: Landscapes

Sadler’s Wells East

Now 64, Russell Maliphant performs his transfixing new solo In a Landscape alongside two further exceptional solos starring outstanding dancers: Daniel Proietto in AfterLight (inspired by Nijinksy) and Alina Cojocaru in Two.

11-14 March

Pina Bausch/Meryl Tankard: Kontakthof: Echoes of 78

Sadler’s Wells

Kontakthof, set in a dance hall where men and women twirl, flirt and fight, is a seminal piece by Pina Bausch created in 1978. Meryl Tankard, who performed in the original, conjures an interaction between the piece as it was then and the dancers as they are now, bringing back nine of the original cast and mixing in archival footage.

7-11 April

English National Ballet: Body & Soul

Touring

The UK premiere of Body & Soul (Part 1), which Crystal Pite originally made for Paris Opera Ballet, is twinned with a premiere by Kameron N Saunders, a choreographer best known for his work with artists such as Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan.

Sadler’s Wells, 19-28 March, then Plymouth Theatre Royal, 30 April-2 May

Still Pointless: BalletBoyz at 25

Sadler’s Wells and touring

The BalletBoyz – Michael Nunn and William Trevitt – have been on many journeys in their quarter of a century together as dancers, commissioners, impresarios and film-makers. This retrospective characteristically mixes documentary film and live performance.

12-16 May, then touring to Cambridge, Lichfield, Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Leicester until 3 July

This Is Rambert: Rambert

Touring

The company celebrates its centenary with a touring programme of high-energy, bite-size works, including collaborations with the dance collective (La)Horde, the choreographer Emma Evelein and a new commission as it looks forward to its next 100 years.

Sadler’s Wells (10-13 June), Theatre Royal, Newcastle (16-17 June), Festival Theatre, Edinburgh (2-4 July), Lowry, Salford (7-9 July)

Marianela: Timeless

Royal Ballet and Opera

The exceptional Argentinian ballerina Marianela Núñez, who has danced with the Royal Ballet for 27 years, presents a specially curated programme of one-act ballets from the company’s repertory and a selection of divertissements performed with fellow company dancers.
