Spreading the word about an astounding nut butter

This week I bring you a gift and a disappointment. I was searching for nut butters with chocolate. I eat a lot of nut butters, every morning stirred into hot porridge studded with secret banana (which means banana chopped up in the bowl, the porridge poured on top, which gently heats it, rendering it wonderfully pudding-y), or on my toast, which must be a good five minutes out of the toaster, so that its initial heat has dissipated.

Some years ago I discovered the best (I think) chocolate nut spread and that was Chocca by Meridian, which boasts a whopping 50% nut content (peanuts, cashews and hazelnuts) and a relatively meagre, compared to other choco spreads, 14% sugar ratio. Chocca is definitely a chocolate spread first, however. I wanted a nut butter with some cocoa.

I searched. Delli, an online shop that boasts the largest number of nut butters I’ve ever seen, has rich pickings. I filled the shopping basket with all manner of jars, some containing cocoa, some not. I eschewed anything with added sugar or sugar products: that’s not my jam. I had high hopes for Nut Blend’s Cacao, Cashew and Almond butter, £6.50, and the raw cacao nibs were a particularly fine touch. But the coconut used overpowered everything for me.

However, and this is the gift (because it’s fab) and the disappointment (it doesn’t involve chocolate), in amongst the tasting I also discovered London Bruncher’s Almond and Espresso Nut Butter, £7.50. Astounding: one of the best things I’ve ever tasted to come out of a jar.
