An outstanding gianduia bar, and remarkably it’s vegan

But why does Aldi have to spell the word ‘gianduja’? It just isn’t the Italian way

Thank goodness for what came next: reasonably priced, fabulous chocolate. This is the sort of chocolate that will sell out and start fevered bulk-buying as only things in Aldi seem able to. It’s new and under its Specially Selected range, and is single-origin from Peru. It’s name? Gianduja Chocolate, £1.99.

I do have to have a small moan here, since traditionally it’s spelt gianduia. There is no ‘j’ in the Italian alphabet although, of course, Italians use it in some words like jeans, etc. The bar is only 33% cocoa solids so, yes, it’s sweet. But, amazingly, it’s vegan/non-dairy. You’d never guess because it tastes so damn creamy. What it does contain are roasted hazelnuts ground into a paste. It’s very good, the balance of hazelnuts is perfect and if you were blind testing, you’d place it in a higher price bracket. Aldi regulars will recognise that it’s basically the Aldi Gianduiotti (available seasonally and, yes, note spelling) and turned into a year-round gianduia bar. If you know someone who likes ‘milk’ chocolate and hazelnuts, they’re about to be made very happy.
