In the Neighbourhood: Ehrenfeld, Germany

Art bunkers, off-licences and aparthotels – a local’s guide to Cologne’s coolest district

If Cologne is a smaller, friendlier Berlin, then Ehrenfeld is its mini-Kreuzberg. On the northwestern edge of the city centre, Ehrenfeld began as a factory workers’ district and now attracts artists, creatives and party kids. To the west of Venloerstraße, its main drag, is a vast warehouse district, concealing rave dens, punk clubs and grassroots art projects. To the north, tranquil fin-de-siècle residential streets scattered with pavement cafés and street-art murals that lead towards the fields and boating lake of stately Blücherpark.

Zum Nachbar’s Eck

Ehrenfeld’s social life revolves around its off-licences. The sign above the door might say “Kiosk”, but they’re invariably called Büdchen by locals, and sling takeaway Wegbier (road beers) around the clock. Right across from the Helmholtzplatz park, community-focused Zum Nachbar’s Eck (“The Neighbour’s Corner”) is a great place to start your night with a fridge-cold Kölsch.

Kebapland

If the queue isn’t enough of a clue, the Kebapland-branded merch in nearby shops might be: this unassuming, sticker-plastered bungalow is an Ehrenfeld institution. The house speciality is juicy, smoky adana (minced lamb) kebabs, grilled over charcoal. If it’s too late to grab one of the handful of tables, order a durum wrap to go (payment is cash-only) and polish it off in nearby Leo-Amann-Park.

Goldmund Literatur Café Restaurant

Lined with bookshelves and named after a Hermann Hesse character, this cafe is a family-friendly go-to for the German daily ritual of kaffee und kuchen (coffee and cake) on the terrace beside the mural-decked arches of Ehrenfeld station. After dark, there are silent book clubs and the odd unplugged live gig on the cafe’s tiny stage. goldmundkoeln.de

Bunker K101

Wander through the atmospheric chambers of this five-storey concrete bunker on Körnerstraße’s to see paintings, sculpture and live performances by the city’s up-and-coming creatives. One exhibition by street art collective Tape That covered the walls in murals made from sticky tape. bunkerk101.de

Inside, is a gig and party space where the crowd goes hard until 5am on weekends, powered by anyone from local house DJs to touring UK alt rock acts. bumannundsohn.de

Die Mehlwerkstatt
