European leaders are keen to put the Ukraine war back on Donald Trump’s agenda during this week’s G7 summit in France, following the signing of the peace deal with Iran. As a candidate, Trump claimed he would settle the war “in one day” and spent the early months of his second term trying to browbeat Volodymyr Zelensky into signing a disadvantageous deal, before losing interest. Since then Ukraine’s hand has been strengthened. European countries, not the US, are now financing Kyiv’s war effort, and Vladimir Putin faces rising discontent at home. Ukraine is also slowly clawing back territory by using drones to cut Russia’s supply lines. The question is whether Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer can refocus the US president’s mind onto the conflict. It is not yet confirmed if Trump will stay for the whole summit.
